Sanquhar Academy pupils get a taste of working life with Connaught

November 19th 2009

Pupils from Sanquhar Academy will be getting a handle on working in areas including plumbing, joinery and plastering as they embark on a weeks work experience with social housing and refurbishment specialists, Connaught.

The six pupils from year four at the school will spend the week with Connaught’s various teams to ensure they gain valuable hands-on experience working across key areas of the business. They will be closely supervised by key Connaught personnel fully trained in each area to ensure the pupils are able to carry out tasks in each of the five areas; office, plumbing, electrical, joinery and plastering.

Ann Szultka, work experience coordinator at Sanqhaur Academy, said: “We are delighted that Connaught is providing this opportunity for our pupils. Finding trade work-experience for our pupils has been really difficult over the past years but it is an area that many of the pupils are interested in. This is a valuable first step in to the workplace for most of the pupils and gives them a real taste of working life.”

The pupils will spend one day learning about each of the key trades and experiencing the office side of things which is central to the smooth running of the business.

Pupils taking part in the week’s programme are Callum Kilpatrick (please insert area each pupil is from), Darren Willison, Logan Hamilton, Robert Sneddon, Amy Marshall, Charly McDowall and Lori Johnson.

Laura Johnston, Connaught customer experience manager, said: “Connaught is committed to working with the next generation to highlight the opportunities available in the workplace and providing work experience for the pupils is a great way of investing in future talent.

“All the pupils will gain a good understanding of the various trades over the course of the week and our team will also be on hand to speak to them about the best ways to get into the industry, whether through apprenticeships or training courses.”
