Home improvement partners help Hackney pupils to ready, stead, glow!

April 8th 2010
Bright sparks at a Hackney school are being encouraged to stand out from the crowd and cycle in safety by the partners working to bring Decent Homes improvements to properties in the area.
Hackney Homes and Connaught Partnerships Ltd, who are working in partnership to bring new kitchen and bathroom improvements to approximately 400 properties in the area, have provided hi-visibility vests and wrist slaps for 100 pupils at Princess May Primary School, on Princess May Road road.
The Connaught customer experience team attended an assembly at the school where they explained that the clothing was being donated to increase their visibility to motorists and as a result improve their safety when travelling to and from school and during school trips. Stephen Spooner, headteacher at Princess May Primary School, said: “The safety of pupils is obviously of paramount importance but equally we don’t want this to discourage walking and cycling to school. With this in mind we participate in numerous programmes to ensure our pupils remain as protected as possible and it is with great thanks therefore that we receive these hi-visibility items courtesy of Hackney Homes and Connaught.”
Myrna Glaze, Connaught liaison officer, said: “Despite road safety lessons and school crossing patrols the daily journey to and from school during the rush-hour is unfortunately a dangerous one for pupils. Often motorists say they struggle to see young people near to the roads so we decided to offer our help by providing hi-visibility clothing for 100 local children and if this helps reduce the chance of accidents we will be delighted.”
Hackney Homes and Connaught are working in partnership to deliver Decent Homes improvements as part of a £10m improvement programme.
