Gosport residents learn a lesson in how to do it yourself

July 2nd 2010
Gosport Borough Council residents have received a lesson in how to be handy at home thanks to the partners bringing major improvements, repairs and maintenance to properties in the area.
Gosport Borough Council and Connaught Partnerships Ltd hosted two DIY workshops in response to residents’ requests for advice and guidance on how to make minor improvements to their homes.
As a result, 14 tenants from the Forton and Bridgemary areas were accommodated in Connaught’s premises within Gosport Borough Council’s depot in Ann’s Hill where they received basic training in plumbing, minor kitchen repairs, putting up shelves and tiling, as well as painting and hanging wallpaper courtesy of Connaught technicians.
“For Gosport Borough Council, working in Partnership with Connaught isn’t just about dealing with bricks and mortar, it’s about adding value to services and both of us working with tenants to exceed expectations. This initiative delivers on those ambitions,” said the Chairman of Housing, Councillor Stephen Philpott.
Sue Widdowson, Connaught project manager, said: “While we are working on home improvements, repairs and maintenance across Gosport we are committed to making a real difference to the local community. After speaking with residents it became clear that many wanted to make minor improvements and bring their own personality to their homes but sometimes lacked the confidence to do so. As a result we were delighted to provide some of our skilled technicians to share expert advice.
“The feedback we have received from those who attended was extremely good and the workshops proved to be such a success that Gosport Borough Council and Connaught are hoping to hold further similar events later in the year.”
Gosport Borough Council and Connaught are working in partnership to deliver planned maintenance works including Decent Homes improvements, external cladding and window replacements, as well as voids maintenance and response repairs, to approximately 3000 properties in the area.
