Bassetlaw schools impress with construction skills

Pupils from four Bassetlaw Schools got to try their hand at joinery, plumbing, tiling and town planning as A1 Housing and partners Connaught hosted a construction skills day at A1 Housing’s new training centre.
A total of 32 year nine pupils from Elizabethan, Retford Oaks, Serlby Park and Portland schools all took part in the competition, with each construction activity being held in the centre’s specialist training bays.
Pupils were evaluated on teamwork and communication as well as the quality and cleanliness of their work, with Retford Oaks taking first place.
Lindsay Bradshaw, A1 Training Centre Manager said: “We were delighted to host the construction skills competition and all of the schools performed really well. As well as getting their hands dirty in the tiling and plumbing it was good to see how they all worked together.
“Now the training centre is up and running we hope to offer more events like these.”
David Hinchley, Connaught operations manager, said: “The Construction Skills Workshop was an invaluable exercise in showcasing to young people the career opportunities available to them in the refurbishment and maintenance industries.
“The pupils participated with real enthusiasm and every one of them went away having achieved something and the event was therefore a great success.”
