£1,000 donation helps kick off a great day of football in Frome

July 29th 2009

Mendip Housing and Connaught have teamed up to help Frome Football Club put on its Frome Town Sports Football Tournament on August Bank Holiday Sunday.

The two companies have donated £1,000 to the local club to help towards the staging of the tournament, which takes place at Oakfield School on Sunday August 31. Fifty teams are taking part made up of pupils, aged from seven to 16, from local schools.

Mendip Housing suggested supporting the local football club after its Director of Property Services Chris George won a £1,000 donation from Connaught at the Chartered Institute of Housing conference held in Harrogate during 2008.

Chris asked staff and tenants for suggestions of local sports groups who would benefit from the money and Frome Football Club’s name was put forward. Connaught also got involved with the club after the nomination and will be donating a special trophy to be presented to the under-13s group winner.

Mendip Housing’s Chris George said: “More than a quarter of our homes are in Frome so we’re really pleased to be supporting the local football club with this tournament.”

Chris Leigh, Connaught Partnerships Director, said: “Connaught is always looking for ways in which we can make a positive impact on the communities in which we work and to leave a lasting legacy.

“We’re hopeful the benefits of the football tournament, such as building relationships between pupils from different schools, team work and exercise, will have a lasting impact on local young people and we are delighted therefore to see the donation we made to Mendip Housing be put to such good use.”

Anthony Millard from the Club said: “Many thanks to both Mendip Housing and to Connaught for their generous financial support towards the running of our annual football tournament.

“Frome Town Sports aims to provide a safe and encouraging environment for all children and young adults of all abilities and circumstances. We aim to be able to help cement and encourage self esteem and team work within the community through an army of willing volunteers but above all else it is essential for the youngsters to take part and have fun while working hard! So thanks once again to Mendip Housing and Connaught for helping us make that possible.”
