Connaught Environmental on the ball with Solihull youth

August 7th 2007
In a bid to combat antisocial behaviour during the summer months, Solihull Community Housing has teamed up with the NS Fusion sports programme and Connaught Environmental, who will also provide employment opportunities for young people.
Five hot-spot areas of anti social behaviour have been identified by SCH and will be targeted with the aim of directing young people to nearby football sessions organised by the council backed sports programme which operates in the north of the borough.
In some instances a 'flying squad' of community sports coaches will also be mobilised to lay on extra sessions as and when it is deemed necessary.
These include drop-in football sessions that will be held in Alcott Wood, off Gloucester Way, Chelmsley Wood on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm throughout the summer for young people aged 10 to 19.
In conjunction with the sports project, those over the age of 16 will be encouraged to take up training and employment opportunities run by Connaught which is responsible for cleaning the estate.
Spokesman John McSherry said the firm has been supporting NS Fusion since it began in 2006 and has had some direct involvement with the young people the scheme targets.
"Connaught is committed to working with our partners to put something back into our local communities to help people so we are delighted to be able to continue to support this outstanding project," he said.
"NS Fusion is recognised by youth workers and other councils as one of the best examples of its kind in the country.
"It is a great opportunity for us to be involved with making a tangible difference to the local area and the lives of young people."
Nick Garnett, Solihull Council's head of leisure, said the scheme would benefit the whole community. "This is a fantastic way of giving young people the chance to make a positive contribution."
